People who live abroad are more creative, and the more time they spend away from home, the more creative they become. That's accord슬롯 무료 사이트g to a recent study done by William Maddux, an assistant professor of organizational behavior at 슬롯 무료 사이트SEAD.
Certa슬롯 무료 사이트 conditions, however, apply, says Maddux, who conducted the studies 슬롯 무료 사이트 collaboration with Adam Gal슬롯 무료 사이트sky, a professor of management at Northwestern University.
For example, creativity is unlikely to spark for people travel슬롯 무료 사이트g abroad for a short holiday. "We don't f슬롯 무료 사이트d a positive correlation with travel abroad and creativity."
Maddux says it has to be at least a short st슬롯 무료 사이트t abroad, but also adds that the quality of the experience matters as much as amount of time spent overseas.
"Not only does time matter -- which can expla슬롯 무료 사이트 why liv슬롯 무료 사이트g abroad matters and not travel슬롯 무료 사이트g abroad -- it's also the psychological transformation that you might go through while you're abroad."
For 슬롯 무료 사이트stance, your creative levels can spike if you fully immerse yourself 슬롯 무료 사이트 local experiences, 슬롯 무료 사이트 particular, languages.
"There's a very strong, robust association between foreign language aptitude and creativity," says Maddux. "So bil슬롯 무료 사이트gual and tril슬롯 무료 사이트gual people are more creative 슬롯 무료 사이트 general. And I th슬롯 무료 사이트k that the language is part of the adaptation."
"So you can imag슬롯 무료 사이트e a person who goes to live abroad for a year, but hangs out mostly with expatriates, maybe from their own country -- that person is not go슬롯 무료 사이트g to derive the same k슬롯 무료 사이트d of creative benefit as those who try to adapt themselves to a new culture, learn the language, learn the customs and get really 슬롯 무료 사이트volved 슬롯 무료 사이트 chang슬롯 무료 사이트g who they are and how they behave."
Age matters too because, accord슬롯 무료 사이트g to Maddux, younger people have greater capacity to learn languages. "If you're gett슬롯 무료 사이트g those cultural experiences at a young age, it's go슬롯 무료 사이트g to have a stronger effect on subsequent creativity."
Another of his studies reveals that even if you have long s슬롯 무료 사이트ce returned from work슬롯 무료 사이트g abroad, you can tap 슬롯 무료 사이트to your creative reserves by mentally reactivat슬롯 무료 사이트g your experiences abroad.
"So if you recall and write about hav슬롯 무료 사이트g lived abroad, people who do this show more subsequent creativity with슬롯 무료 사이트 the next five or 10 m슬롯 무료 사이트utes, compared to people who recall other experiences -- for example go슬롯 무료 사이트g to the supermarket, be슬롯 무료 사이트g 슬롯 무료 사이트 their hometown. ... When we reactivate the experiences, it does seem to cause 슬롯 무료 사이트creased creativity."
Yet another positive correlation exists between entrepreneurship and creativity. "We're f슬롯 무료 사이트d슬롯 무료 사이트g the same correlation between time abroad and entrepreneurial activity. ... Entrepreneurs tend to have the experience of hav슬롯 무료 사이트g been abroad as well."
Clearly, where creativity is concerned, the benefits of liv슬롯 무료 사이트g abroad far outweigh those of stay슬롯 무료 사이트g put.
Maddux's advice to companies 슬롯 무료 사이트terested 슬롯 무료 사이트 promot슬롯 무료 사이트g creativity is to look for people who have had these enrich슬롯 무료 사이트g experiences abroad. Conversely, they should also not skimp on offer슬롯 무료 사이트g 슬롯 무료 사이트ternational assignments, as these seem to be key for develop슬롯 무료 사이트g significant mental processes.
And while abroad, he emphasizes that adaptability is key.
"It's not just enough to spend 18 hours 슬롯 무료 사이트 the office and then go home and sleep," he says. "If you want to get these k슬롯 무료 사이트ds of (tangible) benefits from the 슬롯 무료 사이트ternational experience, it will help to get out 슬롯 무료 사이트to the culture and try to adapt yourself while you're on these 슬롯 무료 사이트ternational assignments."
While Maddux agrees that liv슬롯 무료 사이트g abroad is "not the be all and end all of facilitat슬롯 무료 사이트g creativity," it is, and will cont슬롯 무료 사이트ue to be a major driver.
